The Enemy Within ... Wake Up!

Many are wondering whether a Pennsylvania judge went too far in dismissing a harassment charge against a Muslim who attacked a man for mocking Islam's Prophet Mohammed.

Atheist Ernie Perce had dressed up as what he called "Zombie Mohammed" for a march at a Halloween parade in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

That's when Perce charges a Muslim man named Talaag Elbayomy attacked him on the street.

"He grabbed me, choked me from the back and spun me around to try to get my sign off that was wrapped around my neck," Perce recalled.

Police charged the Muslim with harassment. But when the case went to court, Cumberland County's Judge Mark Martin not only threw it out, he slammed Perce for mocking Islam, calling him a "doofus."

NYC man sentenced to 27 years in failed attempt to join al-Qaida to avenge Muslim abuse

A new Islam-awareness campaign is being launched to tell parents and students that they simply shouldn't believe the editorializing in the textbooks used in Florida's schools.
Two organizations have worked together to produce a study on the controversy, and they are reporting that some of the nuggets that students in Florida's schools can learn from their social studies textbooks include:

• The Jewish Temple in Jerusalem contained "symbolically, the throne of their invisible God."
• Jesus was a "Palestinian Jew" who grew up in Galilee amidst "militant Zealots."
• It was "a few followers" of Jesus who "spread the story" about his resurrection.
• While Islamic Arab warriors "rarely imposed their religion by force," Christian monks "by contrast," were busy converting "peoples of Central and Eastern Europe."
• Israel is to blame for terrorist attacks by Palestinians because they were "angered over the loss of their territory."
• When the Jewish state of Israel was born in 1948, the nation and its neighbors "went to war."
• It was because of the "loss of their territory to Israel" that "militant Palestinians responded with a policy of terrorist attacks."
• "The Quran permitted fair, defensive warfare as jihad, or 'struggle in the way of God'" and this was how Muhammad and his successors expanded their territory.
• And while Jesus is "believed" by followers to be the messiah, it's a fact that "Gabriel continued to send revelations to Muhammad over 22 years."

NEW YORK — A group of Muslim leaders says the N.Y.P.D.'s practice of infiltrating the Muslim community with undercover cops and keeping civilians under surveillance is unfair, and to protest they plan to boycott the mayor's annual Interfaith Breakfast.

Fourteen Muslim leaders sent a letter to the Mayor Michael Bloomberg Wednesday saying they will boycott Friday morning's breakfast over what they are calling "very disturbing revelations" centering on how New York Muslims are treated.

All of this stems from a series of Associated Press articles detailing the use of undercover officers and informants to gather information about Muslims in the city even when no crimes have occurred.

The N.Y.P.D. says at least 44 terrorists who have been captured or killed resided in the five boroughs or metropolitan area and they are following leads.

The police department issued a statement saying: "The N.Y.P.D. lawfully follows leads in terrorist-related investigations and does not engage in the kind of wholesale spying on communities that was falsely alleged."


The statement goes on to say, "There have been at least 14 terrorist plots against New York City since the 9/11 attacks, and the N.Y.P.D. is actively engaged in making certain we are not attacked again."

But Imam Al-Hajj Talib W. Abdur-Rashid of the Islamic Brotherhood told PIX11 News, "We've seen some of the leaked documents, and we do not believe the N.Y.P.D. is following leads spying on school children, spying on college students who are doing nothing more than pursuing their academic study. So we reject and proof will tell that the N.Y.P.D. version of what they are doing is not so."

In an email a mayoral spokesman says, "We have a couple dozen Muslim community leaders who have RSVP-ed that they will be at the breakfast which is about the same as previous years." The statement goes on to say, "The Mayor's office and the N.Y.P.D. maintain their strong ties with the City's Muslim communities."

Victoria Jackson has finally found a way to get the mainstream media to address her theory that Islam is the enemy of the United States and that Muslims have entered every part of our government.

On her "PolitiChicks" online show, the fomer "Saturday Night Live" actress contended that President Obama is part of the Muslim Brotherhood. Her source? "This guy John and Steve and their team B, too, ex-FBI." (Or maybe she was saying "team be, too," if that makes more sense to you.)

"Muslim Brotherhood is controlling all of the Middle East except Israel and they are now in all of our highest positions, inclding the president," Jackson said. "I said to this guy, the FBI guy, do you think Obama's a Muslim? And he said, well, the facts are that all of his policies side with the Muslims and are against Israel. That's just a fact."

She explained how she gathered this information from John and Steve:

"I just went to a briefing in Washington, D.C., across the street from the Capitol, at the Longworth building at 8:30 a.m., two days ago, and it changed my life," she said. "For six hours, I saw pictures and names and dates and facts and Islamic law books and Korans, Surahs for six hours and they proved to me... that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated our highest positions in government and this is serious."

Jackson has received plenty of mainstream attention for her remarks, but unfortunately, most of it focuses on her sounding a little nuts.

Jackson has previously drawn attention for past provocative remarks. They included describing a "Glee" gay kiss as "sickening" and accusing the show of "shoving the gay thing down our throats." She has also said that Obama "bears traits that resemble the anti-Christ."

A TERRORIST wanna-be from Staten Island ratted out dozens of people he called pro-jihadists in New York and Hawaii after he was arrested by the FBI-NYPD Joint Terrorist Task Force, it was revealed Tuesday.

Abdel Hameed Shehadeh was a fount of information when lawmen interrogating him last year in Honolulu showed him more than 40 photos of possible evildoers, according to court papers filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.

Shehadeh’s lawyer is seeking to suppress the 22-page FBI report in which Shehadeh spills his guts.

The alleged rogues’ gallery he describes includes Brooklyn teachers of the Islamic orthodoxy Salafism, a livery cab driver, an Ethiopian Muslim in the U.S. Army and a College of Staten Island student who attended a fund-raiser at Brooklyn College for a terrorist.

Others he ID’d had delivered pro-jihadist speeches at mosques or ranted in online chat rooms, he said, and included a reputed member of the terror group Hamas who lives in Syracuse.

Most bizarre is the homeless husband-and-wife — she comes from a wealthy family and he drives a luxury BMW sedan — who watched a beheading video with Shehadeh, according to an FBI report.

Shehadeh recalled attending a lecture at the Brooklyn Islamic Center in 2008 with someone named “Omar” and a second man who peddled pro-jihad T-shirts. “Almost everything [Omar] and his friend . . . talked about was jihad,” the report states.

The names of the persons of interest are being withheld by the Daily News because Shehadeh’s claims could not be independently confirmed.

Shehadeh’s lawyer publicly filed the FBI report as part of a motion to suppress his client’s post-arrest snitching and statements about his own radicalization.

Shehadeh signed an affidavit claiming he was tricked into waiving his constitutional right against self-incrimination.

The Brooklyn-born Shehadeh, 22, is charged with lying to the feds about a failed attempt to travel to Pakistan and join the Taliban.

He also tried to join the U.S. Army himself, but was rejected because he failed to disclose his overseas trips.

“At some point after stopping the interview, Shehadeh was asked what he was thinking about. (He) answered, ‘How much I incriminated myself,’ ” Special Agent John Tinning and Detective Angel Maysonet wrote.

A Georgia woman who allegedly sent a hoax WMD package to a Republican New York State senator and another package with a bloody severed pig's foot to Rep.Peter King was shot and killed by police on Christmas morning when officers responded to multiple panic alarms at her apartment.

King, a Long Island Republican who held controversial hearings last year on Muslim extremism, alleged in a statement that the woman sent him a package in April, intercepted by postal inspectors, that contained a severed pig's foot and a note calling him a "Muslim basher" and suggesting King kiss her "black Muslim ass."

According to Cobb County police, when the officers arrived at her Marietta, Ga. home, Jameela Barnette opened the door wielding a knife and a handgun. Police say she was shot dead after she took a swipe at an officer with the knife.

"Moments after knocking on the door, a female (who was armed with a knife and handgun) opened it and began assaulting the officer with the weapons. Despite receiving injuries to his arm, the officer was able to use his service weapon to stop the assault," a statement from Cobb County police said.

The officer's injuries are non-life threatening, police said. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation into the incident.

Barnette, 53, allegedly sent a package to New York State Sen. Greg Ball in April that contained a Curious George stuffed monkey, a Star of David and a vial of liquid. She also made threatening statements in a letter filled with a tirade against Jews and Christians, authorities said. The FBI was called in to investigate a potential weapon of mass destruction and Ball's office was locked down.

According to local television station WXXA in New York a woman claiming to be Barnette said she sent the package because she believed Sen. Ball was discriminating against her Muslim faith. Barnette was arrested and indicted earlier this year for her role in sending the package. A judge released her on her own recognizance.

Northeastern University isn't commenting about concerns regarding its Muslim chaplain, despite his recorded statements praising an attempted attack on American forces in Afghanistan as "brave" and his earlier call for Muslims to "grab on to the gun and the sword" to fight injustice.

On Monday, the Investigative Project on Terrorism reported on remarks Abdullah Faaruuq made during a Dec. 8 fundraiser for Aafia Siddiqui, also known as "Lady al-Qaida." Siddiqui, an MIT-educated neuroscientist, was arrested by Afghan officials in 2008, who found notes about mass casualty attacks in her possession. During questioning by U.S. officials, she grabbed an Army officer's M-4 rifle and fired it at the Americans.

"What a brave woman she is," Faaruuq said at the fundraiser. "What a brave woman she continues to be, and how much her bravery and her faith and her belief warrants our support at this time." Had his mother been in Siddiqui's shoes, "she would have took (sic) her West Indian machete and cut her way through those kafirs [unbelievers]."

Siddiqui was convicted of attempted murder and is serving an 86-year prison sentence.

The IPT contacted university spokesmenMonday afternoon, asking whether Faaruuq's endorsement of Siddiqui's actions and other radical statements make him an appropriate person to provide spiritual counseling to Northeastern students. The university has not responded.

Jurors in Boston on Tuesday added another entry to the list of convicted terrorists Faaruuq supports. Tarek Mehanna was convicted on four counts related to his desire to provide support to al-Qaida and three counts of lying to federal investigators. Faaruuq serves on a Free Tarek Mehanna committee.

A former friend who struck a deal with prosecutors testified about a 2004 trip he and Mehanna made to Yemen in hopes of attending a terrorist training camp. They planned to go to Iraq after that to fight American troops.

When that didn't work, Mehanna came back to the United States and translated jihadi videos, including al-Qaida's "39 Ways to Make Jihad." Defense attorneys argued the work was protected free speech. But prosecutor Aloke Chakravarty told jurors the translations provided terrorists "training material to get ready to serve and participate in that fight."

Siddiqui and Mehanna are "Muslims who are being oppressed," Faaruuq said at the recent fundraiser. "And you might well be one of those too if you don't pay careful attention this evening to what I am going to say to you."

Northeastern "should remove him from the position [as chaplain] and ban him from the University for teaching students radical, hateful ideas," said Charles Jacobs, president of Americans for Peace and Tolerance, which has tracked Faaruuq's actions.

That includes a March 2010 recording urging Muslims to "grab on to the gun and the sword" as part of the struggle for justice. At the fundraiser earlier this month, Faaruuq denied he was urging violence if peaceful measures failed. "And now we know there are other ways of fighting other than picking up a sword," he said, "like spending your time and your money, like spending your time and your money."

In an email, Jacobs said Faaruuq crossed a line from unpopular speech to "fund raising for a convicted terrorist, and praising her for grabbing a machine gun to murder people."

"Has the university informed the parents of the Muslim students that they are being spiritually led by someone who supports terrorism, who gleefully states that if his mother would have been with the terrorist Aafia Sadiqui, she would have picked up a machete and attacked those kaffirs?" Jacobs wrote. "Is this what N.E. University wants its Muslim students to learn? This is a spiritual advisor?"

Regardless of his opinions on the Siddiqui and Mehanna cases, Faaruuq should be shocked that people he knew from the community turned so radical, Jacobs said. A moderate chaplain would "be very worried that such radical, hateful, anti-American teachings are getting into his moderate community. He'd have a plan to monitor that and to stop it."

Faaruuq's introduction at the fundraiser also indicated that he was a prison chaplain in Massachusetts for nine years.

Despite a global population of more than 1 billion, Muslims are "cowering at the hand of the disbeliever," he told the Dec. 8 fundraiser. Siddiqui's case is an example.

"And I say they call this the land of the free and the home of the brave," Faaruuq said. "And I call it the land of the coward and the home of the slave."

For a Muslim American in the Middle East, a new kind of prejudice

As a Muslim from the United States traveling to study in the Middle East, I assumed this would be the end to discrimination and prejudice toward me for being a Muslim, but I soon discovered otherwise. Even in a Muslim country, there were ways in which I felt discriminated against — although these differed from the type of prejudice I had become used to as a Muslim growing up in Maryland.
In the U.S., I often faced confusion and/or fear regarding my religion, especially as a Muslim woman who wears the hijab. People would look at me oddly and often publicly denounce my beliefs. Everyone from neighbors to politicians seems to think that it is OK to be fearful and suspicious of Islam and Muslims, especially following the tragic events of Sept. 11 (which some use to justify those beliefs).
Having faced this all my life, I looked at NYU Abu Dhabi's location optimistically — not only because it would be a new place and was an area of interest of mine, but because it was a Muslim country where I would be more accepted. But I soon discovered that even in the United Arab Emirates, there are certain expectations about the kind of person I was supposed to be as a Muslim.
Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way trying to go to a concert in Dubai. My friends were ushered in, but I was told that I would not be able to enter wearing the hijab. It was a moment that stopped me in my tracks: I was being discriminated against as a Muslim in a Muslim country.
I soon realized there were a host of laws that restricted me as a Muslim and that were intended to enforce my morality. These ranged from limitations on the sale of pork and alcohol to where I was and was not permitted to go (e.g. Muslims are not allowed in nightclubs because a proper Muslim should not be there). Some of these made sense, such as the laws regarding halal meat in a majority Muslim country, but others were less obvious, dictating who I was allowed to be with and where I was supposed to be. I went from being feared for my religion in the U.S. to having my religion dictated to me abroad.
In both situations, I experienced prejudice, but for different reasons and in different ways. In the U.S., I felt prejudice more in the court of public opinion, while my experiences in the UAE led to prejudice enshrined in law. In both cases, the determining factor — what identified me as a Muslim — was the hijab. In some situations, I was told that the law specifically applied to those in "national dress" (e.g. an abaya, hijab or dishdasha). I was even told that if I removed my hijab, I would be welcome to enter.
There were also ways that I felt more comfortable in both countries as a Muslim. In the United States, I was free to practice my religion in the way that felt right to me, and it was not dictated to me by others through laws or societal values. I was also part of a more close-knit community that was more accepting of different ways of practicing and participation.
In the United Arab Emirates, I immediately felt at home at first, finally being in a country where I was no longer the minority. I could hear the call to prayer and mosques; places to pray would now be easy to find and access, ranging from mosques on every street corner to places to pray in malls and movie theaters. I was also excited for the fact that I now blended in and was part of a larger Muslim community.
I have learned that prejudice takes many different forms, sometimes more subtle or more overt. But prejudice is prejudice. It affects me regardless of its form. As a Muslim, I have experienced a wide array of prejudices, from how I am expected to act to how I am expected to dress to how I am expected to worship. I have learned that regardless of the source of the restrictions, they have one thing in common: They aim to hold me back from being who I fully am.

Iraq issues arrest warrant for Sunni vice president

BAGHDAD, Dec 19 (Trust.Org) - 

Iraqi authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Sunni Muslim Vice-President Tareq al-Hashemi on suspected links to terrorism after the government said it obtained confessions from his bodyguards, an interior ministry spokesman said on Monday.

The warrant risks fuelling sectarian tensions in Iraq following the withdrawal of the last American troops almost nine years after the invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein. It also puts the country's fragile power-sharing agreement at risk.

Interior Ministry spokesman, Major General Adel Daham, told a news conference confessions by suspects identified as Hashemi's bodyguards, linked the vice president to killings and attacks of several Iraqi government and security officials.

"An arrest warrant has been issued for Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi according to Article 4 of the terrorism law and is signed by five judges... this warrant should be executed," Daham said, waving a copy of what he said was the warrant in front of reporters.

The ministry showed taped confessions, aired on state-run Iraqiya television and other local media, of men it claimed were members of Hashemi's security detail. The men said they had been paid by his office to carry out killings.

The identity of the men could not be independently confirmed.

Hashemi, who could not be contacted for a response, was in Kurdistan, a semi-autonomous enclave in the north, Kurdish political sources said. Kurdistan has its own government and security forces.

Political tensions between Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and his Sunni partners in the country's delicate power-sharing deal have sharpened during the U.S. withdrawal as both parties traded accusations and counter charges.

The completion of the U.S. withdrawal on Sunday left many Iraqis fearful that a shaky peace between majority Shi'ites and Sunnis might collapse and reignite sectarian violence.

Two days earlier Maliki asked parliament for a vote of no-confidence against another leading Sunni politician, Saleh al-Mutlaq, who is deputy prime minister, on the grounds that he lacked faith in the political process.

Hashemi and Mutlaq are both leaders of the Iraqiya bloc, a secular group backed by minority Sunnis, which joined Maliki's unity government only reluctantly and recently boycotted parliament sessions after complaining of being marginalised, even though it is the single biggest bloc in the assembly. "They're making big time money and it's going right into weapons acquisition, terrorist training, recruiting, corruption. Things needed to carry out terrorist attacks across the world," said Rusty Payne of the DEA. "Some of that money is flowing back to the United States, back to these used car companies, to purchase more used cars to ship them to West Africa to sell those at a profit and then mix those used car proceeds in with the drug dollars." The U.S. government says Lebanese financial institutions wired more than $300 million into our country. It was all part of a money laundering scheme that included 30 car dealerships like Ace Auto. DEA Agent Derek Maltz told ABC’s KTUL-TV that the wired money would go to these car dealerships to buy used cars.

"The used cars being purchased in the United States are being shipped into West Africa and they are making 15, 20, 25 percent profit and the proceeds are all being sent back into Lebanon and Hezbollah is benefiting," Maltz told the station. "We do not have detailed specific information on what these car dealership owners knew; we will investigate it jointly with our partners in the United States and hopefully we will shut them down," says Maltz. Payne adds, "What's happening, though, is the amounts are so large that it raised red flags among investigators. There's no way the used car industry in the US and West Africa could produce these kinds of revenues."

Harvard University has dismissed an Indian Hindu professor who wrote a controversial article that appeared to disparage Muslims.

In a July op-ed piece for an English-language Indian publication, Subramanian Swamy implied that the only Muslims in India who should be allowed to vote are those that “acknowledge that their ancestors were Hindus.” He also recommended demolishing hundreds of mosques in India and banning religious conversions.

The op-ed came on the heels of a series of bombings in Mumbai that killed almost two dozen people in mid-July.

In that article, Swamy wrote: “The first lesson to be learnt from the recent history of Islamic terrorism against India and for tackling terrorism in India is that the Hindu is the target and that Muslims of India are being programmed by a slow reactive process to become radical and thus slide into suicide against Hindus.”

Swamy, an economist, lecturer, who also happens to be president of the Janata Party, was condemned by Harvard officials for his "reprehensible" views.

According to reports, the faculty members of Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences voted by an "overwhelming majority" to eliminate two economics courses that Swamy was scheduled to teach in Cambridge this summer – which would essentially remove him from the teaching faculty.

Diana L. Eck, professor of comparative religion and Indian studies at Harvard, was apparently outraged by Swamy’s views. According to the Harvard Crimson newspaper, she said his op-ed "clearly crosses the line by demonizing an entire religious community and calling for violence against their sacred places. There is a distinction between unpopular and unwelcome political views.”

However, Harvard initially stood by Swamy, citing the principles of free speech.

Donald Pfister, dean of the summer school, initially told local media: "I find [Swamy's] position reprehensible, but on the other hand, it is our duty to support departments and their offerings.”

Subsequently, a petition by more than 400 students demanding Swamy’s removal seemed to have turned the tide against him.

The petition stated: “Swamy has exploited this event not only to promote a vision of Indian society based on Hindu supremacy, but to disparage and cast suspicion on the entire Muslim community in India.”

Umang Kumar, a student at Harvard Divinity School, told the Crimson: “These are statements you’d expect a demagogue on the extreme right to say, but a professor who comes here, who got his Ph.D. from Harvard?”

Similarly, Sanjay J. Pinto, a Ph.D. candidate in sociology and social policy, told the Crimson: “[Swamy’s] comments are wrong on many levels. They put forth a vision of Indian society in which not all religious groups are welcome, which is very different from the India that both of us know.”

Pinto added: “Swamy draws a lot of prestige and legitimacy from his position at Harvard. If the Hindu right were to come into power in India, he could very well be someone who takes up a position in government, so I think it’s important for members of this community to play a part in discrediting him and saying, ‘No, he does not represent us.’”

Kumar and Pinto (who are both from India) initiated the petition.

Harvard Philosophy Department Chair Sean Kelly, who originally defended Swamy, later switched sides.

"I was persuaded ... that the views expressed in Dr Swamy's op-ed piece amounted to incitement of violence instead of protected political speech," he said, according to Crimson.

Similarly, Harvard history Professor Sugata Bose (who is himself an Indian Hindu), told media: "[Swamy's] position on disenfranchisement] is like saying Jewish Americans and African Americans should not be allowed to vote unless they acknowledge the supremacy of white Anglo Saxon Protestants.”

Pinto also told the Crimson: “Not allowing Hindus to convert to any other religion, not allowing other groups to vote unless they proudly declare their Hindu ancestry—it’s honestly kind of absurd. They stereotype an entire population of people. How can this man who expresses these views, who’s basically saying that India should only be for Hindus and not for other people, and denigrating all Muslims, how can he teach students at Harvard?”

Swamy himself believes Harvard should reconsider its decision to essentially fire him from campus and charged they did not follow proper procedure.

He told Indian media: "The article was written for a Mumbai newspaper and I teach economics in Harvard. I would assume that they would have sent their petition to me asking for my comments, which is a normal procedure. But they have not done that.”

He added that Harvard (which is considered one of the best universities in the world) may have established a dangerous precedent.

"If tomorrow anyone writes on India and writes rubbish about India, they come here, then they can be punished here for what they write in America. That would be a dangerous principle. Harvard should look at it," he said.

Swamy also defended his views on religion, telling the Crimson: “I can’t condemn all Muslims. I’m not against them. I never said Muslims as a whole are terrorists.”

PressTV  A senior Iranian cleric says the US administration drafted the recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution against Iran to gain the support of the Zionist lobby ahead of the 2012 US presidential election.

The United States Washington is threatening Iran and taking measures against the Islamic Republic because the US is under domestic and foreign pressure, especially from Saudi Arabia and the Zionist lobby, Ali Saeedi Shahroudi, the representative of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei at the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, was quoted by IRNA as saying on Friday. 


In its November 18 resolution against the Islamic Republic, the IAEA Board of Governors voiced “deep and increasing concern” about Tehran's nuclear program and said Iran and the IAEA should enhance dialogue in order to resolve the dispute over the Iranian nuclear energy program. 


The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program. 


Yet, as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA, Iran maintains that it has every right to develop and acquire nuclear technology meant for peaceful purposes. 


Saeedi that Israel and Saudi Arabia are very displeased about the fact that Iran has become a major player in the region in recent years. 


He went on to say that the US allegation that Iran was involved in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington is another example of the United States bowing to foreign pressure. 


On October 11, the US Justice Department accused Iran of plotting to assassinate Saudi Arabian Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir, with help from a man suspected of being a member of a Mexican drug cartel. 


However, Tehran says the media hype created by Washington is an attempt to deflect attention from the anti-corruption and anti-corporatism protests currently rocking the country.

Journalist Mona Eltahawy alleges sexual assault in Egypt detention

The US-based Egyptian journalist Mona Eltahawy has been released, according to her personal Twitter account, after 12 hours in detention at the hands of Cairo security forces. A later tweet from the account @monaeltahawy said that she was sexually and physically assaulted while being held inside the interior ministry in Cairo, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A US embassy representative in Cairo told the Guardian that the reports of her detention were "very concerning" and that "US embassy consulate officers are engaging Egyptian authorities".

At 10:30am on Thursday, the former Reuters Middle East correspondent who has been lauded for her recent coverage of the Egyptian uprising, began tweeting that she had spent 12 hours in detention under the authority of interior ministry and military intelligence officials and that she had suffered a serious sexual assault by up to half a dozen members of the Egyptian security forces. She also said that she had been kept blindfolded for hours and also posted a picture of her severely bruised hand and then both her arms in casts.

She also thanked supporters after #freemona began trending around the world on Twitter.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday night, Eltahaway who is a columnist for various papers including the Toronto Star, the Jerusalem Report and Denmark's Politiken, and has also written for the Guardian, described scenes in and around Tahrir Square including news that a family friend of hers had been killed. She ended the message by damning the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (Scaf) who have control overEgypt's transition.

At approximately 11pm GMT she wrote "Pitch black, only flashing ambulance lights and air thick with gas Mohamed Mahmoud #Tahrir". At around the same time she then described the violence occurring around the gates of the American University in Cairo of which she is an alumnus.

"Across street from AUC gate I used to enter every day Mohamed Mansour. Can't believe it. A cacophony sirens, horns, flashing ambulance lights" In a penultimate tweet she appeared to write "Beaten arrested in interior ministry".

Other journalists are also thought to have been detained on Wednesday night. Eltahawy last wrote for the Guardian on Friday about a young Egyptian female blogger who had decided to post a naked photo of herself on her blog in an act of defiance.

The 44-year-old was born in Port Said, but later lived in the UK, Saudi Arabia and Israel, settling in the US in 2000.

In 2009, the European Union awarded her its Samir Kassir prize for Freedom of the Press, and last year she was awarded the Anna Lindh Foundation's special prize for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism.

The Egyptian embassy in London has yet to comment on her detention.

Republican GOP Candidates Bash Pakistan

WASHINGTON: Republican presidential candidates have criticised Pakistan, calling it one of the most violent and unstable nations but remained sharply divided over whether the US should continue to provide aid to Islamabad.

While Texas governor vowed to cut down US aid to Pakistan to zero till it helped US meet its national security interests against terrorists, two other Republican candidates Jon Huntsman andNewt Gingrich argued in favour of more drone attacks against terrorists inside Pakistan.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, however, argued in favour of continued engagement with Pakistan given that it was a nuclear weapon state.

"Pakistan is a concern. That's the country that ought to keep everybody up at night. You have not (Pak) President (Asif Ali) Zardari in charge but (its Army Chief) General (Ashfaq Pervez) Kayani, over the military, which also is responsible for the ISI.

"You've got the youngest demographic of 160 million people in Pakistan. You've got a madrassa movement," Huntsman said.

"You've got over 100 nuclear weapons. You've got trouble on the border. You've got a nation-state that is a candidate for failure. I say it's a haven for bad behaviour, it's a haven for training the people who seek to do us harm," Huntsman said adding that he was in favour of expanding drone program which would serve US national interests.

Acknowledging that Pakistan has been "the epicentre of dealing with terrorism" Congresswoman Bachmann said that the country has training centres for terrorist outfits.

"They also are one of the most violent, unstable nations that there is," she said.

A member of the intelligence committee in the House of Representatives, she said 15 of the nuclear sites in Pakistan are available or are potentially penetrable by jihadists.

"Six attempts have already been made on nuclear sites. This is more than an existential threat," Bachmann said.

"We have to take this very seriously. The US has to be engaged. It is complicated. We have to recognise that the Chinese are doing everything that they can to be an influential party in Pakistan. We don't want to lose influence," she said.

"...A nation that lies, that does everything possibly that you could imagine wrong -- at the same time, they do share intelligence data with us regarding al-Qaida," she said.

"We need to demand more. The money that we are spending right now is primarily intelligence money to Pakistan. It is helping the US," Bachmann said thus arguing that it was not in the national security interest to snap ties with Pakistan.

"At this point I would continue that aid, but I do think that the Obama policy of keeping your fingers crossed is not working in Pakistan," she said.

However, Texas governor Rick Perry advocated against any aid to Pakistan.

"Until Pakistan clearly shows that they have America's best interests in mind, I would not send them one penny," he vowed.

But Bachmann still argued in favour of engaging Pakistan as the consequences otherwise would be very dangerous for the US.

"We have to recognise what's happening on the ground. There are nuclear weapons all across this nation, and potentially al-Qaida could get a hold of these weapons," she said.

Perry said that US needs to engage in India and Afghanistan.

"We've got Afghanistan and India working in concert right now to leverage Pakistan," he said.

"I think if we would create a trade zone in that part of the world, where you have all of those countries working together, that may be the answer to getting Pakistan to understand that they have to work with all of the countries in that region," the texas governor said.

Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, took a tough approach against Pakistan.

"You tell the Pakistanis: Help us, or get out of the way, but don't complain if we kill people you're not willing to go after on your territory where you have been protecting them," he said.
