A new interpretation is being put forward for the inscription on a tiny clay object, only a week after it was touted as the first archaeological find to confirm written testimony of ritual practices at Jerusalem's Temple.

The object, discovered in an archaeological survey at the northwestern corner of the Temple Mount, was initially thought to read "Daka LeYa," which means "pure to God" in Aramaic.

The artifact, considered the first confirmation of certain ritual Temple practices.

Excavators Prof. Ronny Reich of the University of Haifa and Dr. Eli Shukron of the Israel Antiquities Authority told a press conference last week that this was a seal used to mark objects used in the Temple as ritually pure, and that such a seal is mentioned in the Mishna.

But Prof. Shlomo Naeh of the Hebrew University's Talmud department believes the inscription could be read differently. "I was sitting with my son and looking at the photograph, and in a moment of intuition, I realized what it could be," he told Haaretz Tuesday.

Naeh also believes the object is related to Temple worship and purity, but reads the inscription differently, as "Dakar a Leyehoyariv." Dakar in Aramaic means ram and a stands for aleph, the first day of the week, when the priestly order of Yehoyariv was on duty in the Temple.

Thus, the object was used in Temple worship, but not how Reich and Shukron believe it was, says Naeh. To ensure the purity of animal sacrifices offered in the Temple - and to maintain an economic monoply, Naeh believes - pilgrims had to buy their offerings in the Temple courts. They gave money to a treasurer who would exchange it for a token inscribed with the type of sacrifice they had purchased and the date.

Like Reich and Shukron, Naeh supports his theory with a mishnaic verse citing the existence of such tokens. With regard to Reich and Shukron's interpretation, he said: "Purity was very fluid; the touch of an impure person was enough to make the object impure, so it is unlikely such a seal existed."

He also said the object could not be a seal because it lacked a hole for a thread or a handle to affix it to another object.

"People have been saying the ancient sages fantasized everything about the Temple. But ... they knew what they were talking about. For me, this is uplifting. The sages of the Mishna, my guys, win out," Naeh said.

 Turkish passports key to untold tale of Holocaust survivors

ANKARA (AFP)---Unbeknownst to many, Turkish diplomats on duty around Europe saved hundreds of Jews during World War II by giving them Turkish passports, enabling them to travel to safety in Turkey.   

This little known episode is told in an independent documentary entitled "Turkish Passport", being promoted as finally revealing "a secret kept for 66 years".   

The film recounts memories known mainly to 19 diplomats and the Jews they saved from German Nazi death camps. It is based on testimonies by witnesses and their relatives.   

"To remember and never to forget," said Gunes Celikcan, 30, one of the producers, as he talked about why the film was made.   

"There is not much about what the Turks did during that period of history," Celikcan told AFP, as Turkey remained neutral during World War II.   

He said the diplomats saved around 2,000 Jews from the Holocaust but the exact figure is unknown   

"We wanted to show this for the very first time and commemorate those diplomats," none of whom survive today, he said.   

The docudrama directed by Burak Arliel was first shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It has since been screened in Istanbul and other Turkish cities and made the rounds of festivals in the US and Europe.   

And though the buzz is quiet, it's building -- and not all is favourable.   

Its release comes at a low-point in relations between Israel and Turkey, after Israel's refusal to apologize for a commando raid on a flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip. The incident left nine Turkish nationals dead on May 31, 2010.   

In protest, Turkey expelled the Israeli ambassador and froze military ties and defence trade deals.   

The Palestinians have widespread support in Turkey, where a wildly popular Turkish film series, "Valley of the Wolves", has fuelled strains, blasted by Israel as having anti-Semitic content.   

Celikcan said the film has been six years in the making and "has nothing to do with the changing political spectrum".   

But not all agree, including the chief political analyst for The Jerusalem Post, Gil Hoffman, and former Israeli cultural attache in Turkey Batya Keinan.   

In a recent article reprinted in several Turkish newspapers and websites, Hoffman said the movie was "rewriting history" with one of its "central messages -- that the Turkish government was actively involved in saving Jewish lives in Europe."

 This "does not appear to be the case", he wrote. "Historical records indicate that the diplomats acted on their own, despite orders to the contrary from Ankara."   

Hoffman also quoted Keinan. "The Turkish press office is using the movie for propaganda," she said. "They are trying to say 'we are good people who protected Jews in the Holocaust and Palestinians now, and yet you shoot at us.' Shame on you."   

The comments have angered the movie's backers.   

"This film is not propaganda. ... There is no state involvement," said Asli Sena Genc, a representative for the Istanbul promoters. "This is a historical fact."   

Celikcan said the Turkish foreign ministry gave the filmmakers access to official archives, but ministry officials told AFP the film was a private initiative and the ministry made no official contribution.   

The docudrama recounts how the diplomats, including ambassador to Vichy France Saffet Arikan, found a way out for Turkish and foreign Jews, sending them to Istanbul on 12 trains at different points during the war.   

Behic Erkin, Turkey's ambassador to Paris from 1940-43, and Kudret Erbey, consul-general in the German city of Hamburg from 1940-45, were also involved. 

 "Turkish diplomats did their best to save Jews amid the raging brutality against Jews during World War II," said Naim Guleryuz, a historian and consultant on the film who heads a Turkish foundation that promotes the history and culture of Turkish Jews.   

"This part of the story is actually known by historians but we wanted to make it public knowledge through this documentary," he said.   

Researchers went to the United States, Israel, France and Germany, tracking down survivors or their relatives, some of whose tales are told on the film's official website.   

In one, Arlette Bules recalls when her father was arrested by the Germans and sent to the internment camp of Drancy, outside Paris.   

"My mother immediately went to the Turkish Embassy and asked for help rescuing my father. Thanks to the letters written by the ambassador, my father was rescued," she said.   

Celikcan recalls another testimony about a Jewish father who called his two daughters to his deathbed after the war. "He told them 'never forget that it was the Turks who saved us' and then died making a military salute."   

"We did this film without any expectation," Genc told AFP. "We only wanted to reveal a secret which has been kept for so many years."   

Celikcan was philosophical. "If this film makes a positive impact to mend fences between the two countries, we should only be happy for that" -- a view also held by Israeli diplomat Keinan, who has worked for recognition in Israel of these Turkish diplomats' wartime role.   

"Even though there are problems with the 'Turkish Passport', the aggressive promotion of the movie could end up helping the current efforts to improve ties between Israel and Turkey," she said in The Jerusalem Post.

The latest in Arab claims? That Jerusalem was built by the Arabs, and Jerusalem is not a Jewish city.  Really?  Arabs and Islam weren't around when the Holy Temple stood, and even the Arabs recognize this, as their name for Jerualem, 'Al Quds' means 'The Holy' which is an abbreviation for another Arabic name used for Jerusalem -"Bayt al-MaQDeS" (The Holy House).  What Holy House? 19 November, 2011 - JERUSALEM, Israel -- An Israeli official says that the admission of Palestinians as a member state of UNESCO has emboldened them to claim Judeo-Christian biblical sites as their own.

The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization admitted the Palestinians as a member state Nov. 1.

One of those sites is the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron. Four thousand years ago, the Bible says Abraham bought the cave in Hebron to bury his wife Sarah. Isaac, Jacob and their wives are also buried there.

But Palestinians want UNESCO to recognize the Cave of the Patriarchs and other sites as Muslim holy places in "Palestine."

Israeli government minister Yuli Edelstein said the Palestinian request is not about peace.

"Their demand is not about cooperation. Their demand is a political demand to wipe off all the traces of the Jewish history and Jewish connection to the region," Edelstein said.

The cave is currently divided between a mosque and a synagogue so each faith has a place to pray.

Israel was highly criticized when it announced plans to improve the site last year and include it as an Israeli heritage site.

The head of the Islamic authorities in Hebron said at the time that the site is holy only to Muslims.

"It is a pure Muslim holy place and there is no right for non-Muslims to be here or to pray here, and I'm against the presence of the Jews, even in the old city," Haj Zeid al Ja'bari, general director of Islamic Religious Authorities in Hebron, told reporters then.

Even before UNESCO admitted what it calls Palestine as a full member this month, it had already called the Cave and Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem "Palestinian sites."

The Palestinian Authority now also wants the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem to be deemed a Palestinian site. The church is built over the site many believe to be the birthplace of Jesus.

Palestinians are also threatening to sue Israel for what they say is stealing Palestinian antiquities and attempting to change what they call the Islamic and Arabic character of Jerusalem's Old City.

Israelis say Jews and Christians alike should be concerned. Based on past experience, they won't likely be able to visit the site in Hebron if it comes under Muslim Palestinian control.

"We know for a fact that when the authorities were not Israeli authorities, Jews were not allowed even to be here," Edelstein said.

"The concept of an Islamic holy place is that no one else is allowed to be here," said David Bedein, bureau chief, Israel Resource News Agency.

"The concept of a Jewish holy place is exactly the opposite," he said. "When there's a Jewish holy place, everyone can visit."

Bedein said that in 1975, Israel's then-ambassador to the U.N. Chaim Herzog answered an Arab challenge to Israel's rights to the Cave by using the Bible to make his case.

"He opened up the Bible to Genesis 23 and said, 'This is our right. We purchased it.'"

"It's ours and we're going to live here," he continued. "We're going to pray here and we're going to invite all the nations of the world to pray with us here.'"

Muslims Hate Jews up to Their Bones – But Why?

First of all, it must be understood that traditional Muslims summarily hate all non-Muslims, period. However, they hate Jews more than anybody else on Earth. In Islam’s oral tradition, it is believed that killing one Jew is equal to the killing of fifty non-Jewish unbelievers.  Every muslims traditionally learn from the mullahs and seniors—that they must hate Jews more than any other infidels. All muslims (good or bad) do believe that Jews are the worst enemy of Muslims and they are advised to take cautions when dealing with Jews.

Remember that American reporter (Daniel Pearl) who was the first victim of sensational beheading by Al-Qaeda in Pakistan (by Khaled Shaik) in 2002, right after America removed Talibans? Early 2011 (during uprising in Egypt), Lora Logan CBS reporter in Egypt was brutally raped and tortured because they thought she was a Jew, although she was not actually a Jew? What it’s telling us? There is no question that every muslim child is taught about the danger from Jews universally around the Muslims world. I never heard any muslim who can deny that Muslims universally fear and hate Jews most, period.

I do believe, Jews in the Middle East know it very well. But, Jews residing in the western world, especially Jews living in the USA do not quite understand how much Muslims hate them, and it is baffling to me that many Jews make excuses for the terrible behavior of Muslims. Many Jewish rabbis and Jewish leaders deliberately join their hands in support of the so called “Inter-faith” meeting which is nothing but Islamic Taqiyya only to fool the Jews.

Perhaps Jews do not know how this special hatred for Jews is rooted in the Islamic theology and history. It alarms me to see Islamic jihad and draconian sharia advancing globally, and I can see more Jews as allies to them.  By not taking a stand against Islamists, Jews are emboldening their agenda.  I am writing this to wake up Jews who are under the delusion that Islam is a religion that is fundamentally friendly to them.

This hatred has nothing to do with land claims about Israel, which are false claims made throughout the Muslim world.  The Muslim hatred of Jews pre-dates the existence of the modern state of Israel by some 1400 years and is based on verses in the Qur’an and in the hadiths. From earliest childhood on, Muslim youngsters are brainwashed to believe that Jews are the worst enemy of Allah, with Christians, polytheists, and Hindus coming next. The rationale for this hatred is that everyone must accept Islam, since Muslims believe that it is superior to all other religions and Islam is the only true religion on Earth.

When Muhammad was still weak, with only 75 to 100 followers, and was trying to convince the Jews they should accept him as the latest Biblical prophet, he lavished praise on them and reframed Biblical verses to flatter them.  Thus, he chose Jerusalem as his qibla, the geographical direction to use when praying.  Later, he changed it to Mecca because Jews did not respond to his religious claims, and he was furious with them [1].

While trying to charm the Jews into accepting his new religion, Muhammed came out with sweet verses like this, showing acceptance of other religions:

Surah 2.62  Surely those who are Jews, Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.

Jews should not be fooled by the peaceful verses Muhammed introduced at the beginning of his career in Mecca, when he was politically weak.  As soon as he became stronger, he made statements of war, which canceled out (abrogated) the earlier verses. More Here
