Iranian women fight controversial ‘polygamy’ bill

The controverisal 'polygamy' bill would reduce Iranian women's rights even further.

On a summer night in 2008, the wives of some Iranian members of Parliament started receiving phone calls.

“Would you mind if I married your husband – just for a week?” asked the female voice on the end of the line. 

The callers argued that taking another wife is a Muslim man’s right. By allowing it, the MPs’ wives would be performing a good Islamic deed. Some of the wives hung up in shock. 

But marrying the MPs was the last thing the callers actually wanted. In reality, they were women’s rights activists opposed to a controversial “Family Protection Bill” which the Iranian government proposed in 2007. 

The activists say they discovered that at least 65 male members of the country’s 290-strong parliament had two or more wives. This is despite the fact that polygamy contravenes the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which Iran has ratified. Article 23 stipulates that states must ensure that men and women have equal rights when marrying or at the dissolution of marriage.   More Here ... Amnesty International

A Look At Conflicts Between Iran and Britain

Tensions between Britain and Iran date to the 19th century when London acquired large economic concessions. Britain later had significant control in Iran's oil industry. For decades, conspiracy-minded Iranians have alleged British interference in Iran, including in the overthrow of the late Shah in 1979.

Here are some recent incidents:

APRIL 1980:

Iranian gunmen storm the country's embassy in London and take 26 hostages. British special forces later retake the building and kill five of the gunmen, who said they were protesting against oppression in Iran.

FEBRUARY 1989

Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issues a religious edict ordering Muslims to kill British author Salman Rushdie, saying his novel “The Satanic Verses” was blasphemous to Islam. Iran later breaks diplomatic relations with Britain. The two countries normalize relations ten years later.

MARCH 2007:

Iran detains 15 British Navy personnel on charges of illegally entering Iranian waters. Britain denied the claim. The sailors are freed the next month.

JUNE 2007:

Iran's foreign ministry condemns Britain's decision to grant knighthood to Salman Rushdie, calling it an insult to the Muslim world.

JUNE 2009:

Britain freezes some Iranian assets under sanctions imposed for Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Iran's supreme leader brands Britain as the “most evil” of the country's enemies. He suggests Britain had a role in unrest tied to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's controversial re-election.

NOVEMBER 2011:

Britain cuts financial ties with Iranian banks in a new sanction against Iran's alleged effort to develop nuclear weapons. Iranian protesters storm Britain's embassy in Tehran, two days after Iran's parliament votes to reduce ties with Britain in response to the new sanctions.

Conflicting reports? Less than two weeks after a mysterious explosion destroyed an Iranian missile base near Tehran, the Islamic Republic's official news agency Fars reported Tuesday that a loud blast was heard in the city of Isfahan at 2:40 pm local time, but later removed the report. 

According to the initial report, search and rescue teams called to the scene confirmed the blast, but reported no injuries.

Iran's uranium conversion plant is located just outside Isfahan – one of the country's largest cities.

The report also stated that a security official confirmed that the explosion had occurred, but refused to give further details.

  

The district's security department head Muhammad Mahdi Ismaili told the news agency that he hadn't received "exact information, but the incident is being investigated."

Conflicting reports

In a curious turn of events, shortly after the initial report was published, the item was removed from the news agency's website, which is affiliated with the country's Revolutionary Guard.

Hours later, conflicting reports began to surface, the deputy governor of Isfahan province telling Iran's Mehr news agency that there was no report of a major explosion in the province. 

"So far no report of a major explosion has been heard from any government body in Isfahan," he was quoted as saying.

However, the news agency also quoted another Iranian media outlet as saying that a blast took place at a petrol station in a town near Isfahan.

Meanwhile, the head of Isfahan province judiciary told Isna news agency that an explosion-like sound was heard across the city. 

"In the afternoon, there was a noise like an explosion, but we don't have any information from security forces on the source of the noise," Gholamreza Ansari was quoted as saying.

The uranium conversion plant is an integral part of Iran's nuclear program, where urania, also known as Yellowcake, is processed into uranium hexafluoride gas (UF6).

From there, the gas is transferred to Iran's nuclear facilities in Natanz and Qom.

Two weeks ago, 17 Iranian servicemen were killed and several others seriously wounded in anexplosion at a military base that stored missiles near Tehran. The explosion also killed Hassan Tehrani Moqaddam, one of the key figures in Iran's missile program.

Earlier on Monday, The IDF head of Intelligence Research Department Brigadier General Itai baron told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that "the blast in the site where surface-to-surface missiles were developed can delay or bring to a complete halt the production of the missiles at that site."

"However," Baron cautioned, "It must be emphasized that Iran has other development sites other than the one that was destroyed

Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi says Iran will teach Israel a good lesson if the entity tries to attack the Islamic Republic.

Vahidi said on Sunday that Israel will not have a minimal chance of survival after venturing a military attack against Iran, as Iranian armed forces will pound all of Israel with thousands of missiles, Fars News Agency reported. 

“The enemy must answer this question, if it attacks Iran, for how long a battle and losing how many of its warships and vessels has it prepared itself?” 

“Why is the Zionist regime making threats (against Iran)? How many missiles have they prepared themselves for? 10,000? 20,000? 50,000? 100,000? 150,000 or more?" the Iranian defense minister asked. 

He advised the US and its allies to realize Iran's incredible might and know that in the event of a war the Islamic Republic will teach the Americans what war really is and what soldiers are supposed to be like. 

Vahidi said Iranian armed forces will not hesitate to defend the country's sovereignty, adding that if the Zionist regime decides to carry out its threats against Iran, Basij forces will take out revenge [on the entity] for years of [the entity] bullying oppressed nations.” 

The United States and Israel have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the "option" of a military strike, based on the allegation that Iran's nuclear work may consist of a covert military agenda. 

Iran has refuted the allegations, saying that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA, it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. 

While Israel refuses to allow inspections of its nuclear facilities or to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty based on its policy of nuclear ambiguity, Iran has been subjected to snap International Atomic Energy Agency inspections due to its policy of nuclear transparency. 

Israel recently test fired a new long-range missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads. 

This three-stage Jericho-3 missile, which is capable of delivering a 750-kilo warhead to a distance, is estimated to have a range of up to 10,000 kilometers. Paradoxically, Israel's new nuke-capable missile, which can target many parts of the globe, is not considered a threat in the eyes of the West.

In the above video, Kuwaiti Shaykh Yasir al-Habib, a Shi'a, explains and justifies the Islamic practice of zawaj al-mut'a, or temporary marriage (lit. 'pleasure marriage'), which is many respects Islamically-sanctioned prostitution. In the longer clip which I took this excerpted portion from, Shaykh al-Habib starts out by saying that Sunnis often try to embarrass Shi'a by saying that they're going to marry their sisters in a pleasure marriage. Al-Habib responds by saying that, first of all, in Islam a brother has no authority over the actions of his sister. And secondly, he contends that Sunnis want him to deny pleasure marriage simply because some people find it repulsive. Then he turns the argument around, explaining that Sunnis attempt to deny pleasure marriage while accepting marriage with the intent to divorce, which is essentially the same thing. Then in the clip I transcribed above, al-Habib explains that pleasure marriages were sanctioned by the Prophet Muhammad, who "didn't find it repulsive." He also brings up a hadith or saying from one of the companions of Muhammad, who said that, "We contracted temporary marriage giving a handful of the dates or flour as a dower during the life time of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and during the time of Abu Bakr until Umar forbade it because of Amr Ibn Huraith" (from al-islam.org).
