Chinese Police Demolish Mosque

HUNDREDS of Muslims fought with armed police who demolished a mosque in north China with several people injured in the "riot", police and a human rights group said.

The violence between local Muslims and roughly 1000 armed police began after police declared illegal a newly renovated mosque in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and moved to destroy it, the Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, in Hong Kong, said.

The Hui are one of several Muslim minority groups in China.

Two people were killed and 50 injured after police fired tear gas and used knives and batons to beat back ethnic Hui Muslim protesters in Taoshan village, Hexi township, the rights group said, citing villagers.

Hexi township police denied any deaths when contacted.

A policeman surnamed Ma confirmed that the mosque was torn down. He told AFP a "riot" occurred in Hexi on Saturday afternoon.

"Two police officers and two villagers got injured and several villagers were taken away by the police, but I don't know how many," Ma said.

One Taoshan local, who was away when the violence occurred, said his relatives had told him over the telephone that on December 30 an official had shouted "(the mosque) is illegal" and ordered the armed police to tear it down.

"Clashes happened and more than 100 people went missing," Jin Haitao told AFP. He said many villagers' injuries were caused by police using a high-pressure water cannon to disperse those trying to stop destruction of the mosque.

Georgia Woman Killed by Police After Hoax Packages to 'Anti-Muslim' GOP Pols

A Georgia woman who allegedly sent a hoax WMD package to a Republican New York State senator and another package with a bloody severed pig's foot to Rep.Peter King was shot and killed by police on Christmas morning when officers responded to multiple panic alarms at her apartment.

King, a Long Island Republican who held controversial hearings last year on Muslim extremism, alleged in a statement that the woman sent him a package in April, intercepted by postal inspectors, that contained a severed pig's foot and a note calling him a "Muslim basher" and suggesting King kiss her "black Muslim ass."

According to Cobb County police, when the officers arrived at her Marietta, Ga. home, Jameela Barnette opened the door wielding a knife and a handgun. Police say she was shot dead after she took a swipe at an officer with the knife.

"Moments after knocking on the door, a female (who was armed with a knife and handgun) opened it and began assaulting the officer with the weapons. Despite receiving injuries to his arm, the officer was able to use his service weapon to stop the assault," a statement from Cobb County police said.

The officer's injuries are non-life threatening, police said. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation into the incident.

Barnette, 53, allegedly sent a package to New York State Sen. Greg Ball in April that contained a Curious George stuffed monkey, a Star of David and a vial of liquid. She also made threatening statements in a letter filled with a tirade against Jews and Christians, authorities said. The FBI was called in to investigate a potential weapon of mass destruction and Ball's office was locked down.

According to local television station WXXA in New York a woman claiming to be Barnette said she sent the package because she believed Sen. Ball was discriminating against her Muslim faith. Barnette was arrested and indicted earlier this year for her role in sending the package. A judge released her on her own recognizance.

Banda Aceh - Nearly 1 000 police officers found to have used drugs in Indonesia's staunchly Muslim Aceh province will be given a month to get clean or face dismissal, police said on Wednesday.

The officers, representing at least 6% of the provincial police force, failed drug tests carried out by the National Narcotics Agency, Aceh police chief Iskandar Hasan told AFP.

The police tested positive for a range of drugs, including crystal methamphetamine, known commonly as ice, marijuana, and MDMA, the active drug in ecstasy pills.

Police have sent 189 officers so far to month-long rehabilitation.

"We will give them a month to see whether they will change their ways or not. If they cannot change, we'll fire them," he said.

Police and Prostitutes Clash in Nigeria

There was pandemonium on Tuesday night at a hotel located at 16 Balogun Street, Agege area of Lagos State, following a clash between policemen and prostitutes.

Daily Trust correspondent, who witnessed the incident, reports that the clash ensued as a result of the arrest of customers of the sex hawkers by the police. The policemen arrived the hotel in a 14-seater commercial bus with number plate Lagos XZ 561 LND. And on arrival, four of them went into the hotel, leaving one officer and the driver of the bus behind. After a while, those who went in were heard exchanging words with the prostitutes, who protested the arrest of their clients.

Our correspondent reports that despite the protest, the policemen forcefully dragged five persons from the hotel into the bus. But when the sixth person was brought out, he asked the police what his offence was, and none of them answered him. At that point, the prostitutes started shouting ole, ole, ole (thief, thief, thief) at the policemen.

The prostitutes were however forced to shut up when one of the policemen threatened to shoot them if they continued with the insult. After the prostitutes calmed down, the policemen went into their bus and sped off the scene with the six arrested persons.

Attempt to get comments from any of the policemen was fruitless as none of them was ready to speak to anyone. But one of the prostitutes, who simply identified herself as Rose, alleged that policemen always come to the hotelto harass them and their customers.

“They will tell us that they have been asked to come and ‘raid’ us by their boss. And if we ask what our offence is, they won’t tell us. Sometimes, some of them will even force us to sleep with them before we can be released,” Rita said.

When contacted for comments on the issue, the spokesperson of the Lagos Police Command, DSP Samuel Jinadu said the matter would be investigated.
