Banda Aceh - Nearly 1 000 police officers found to have used drugs in Indonesia's staunchly Muslim Aceh province will be given a month to get clean or face dismissal, police said on Wednesday.

The officers, representing at least 6% of the provincial police force, failed drug tests carried out by the National Narcotics Agency, Aceh police chief Iskandar Hasan told AFP.

The police tested positive for a range of drugs, including crystal methamphetamine, known commonly as ice, marijuana, and MDMA, the active drug in ecstasy pills.

Police have sent 189 officers so far to month-long rehabilitation.

"We will give them a month to see whether they will change their ways or not. If they cannot change, we'll fire them," he said.

In this strict Islamic corner of the world’s most-populous Muslim nation, authorities rounded up 65 male and female punk-rock fans after a recent concert for a bit of “reeducation.”

That meant having their mohawks and dreadlocks shaved, their clothes destroyed and their piercings yanked out before they were paraded around like crime suspects.

The punkers have cried harassment. Authorities say they’ve done nothing wrong.

“We're not torturing anyone. We're not violating human rights,” a provincial police chief was quoted as saying in London’s Daily Mail. “We're just trying to put them back on the right moral path.”

League issues ‘code of honor’ for Muslim journalists

The Muslim World League (MWL) issued on Thursday a “code of honor” for media institutions and journalists in the Muslim world, calling on them to spread Islamic messages while countering biased reports against Muslims and Islam.

The code of honor was presented during the closing ceremony of the Second International Conference on Islamic Media in Jakarta, which raised the theme “New Media and Communication Technology in the Muslim World: Opportunity and Challenge”.

“The conference recommends the issuance of a code of honor for communication and information media according to the attached draft and circulation of it among ministries of information and media institutions in the Muslim world,” conference participant Mohammed Musa said as he read out recommendations from the three-day
conference.

“[The conference also] stresses the need to adhere to [the code of honor] when issuing national media codes, as well as codes for media institutions,” said the communications professor from New Zealand’s University of Canterbury.

The code of honor is divided into four sections: 

(1) general principles and objectives, 

(2) rights, 

(3) responsibilities and 

(4) duties of Muslim media persons.

In the general principles and objectives section, the code calls on Muslim media figures “to affirm a belief in the moral principles and values of Islam, to safeguard the Islamic identity from the negative effects of globalization and westernization and to ensure freedom that is responsible and disciplined by sharia guidelines”, among
others.

In the rights section, the code guarantees the right of expression (but still within the limits of sharia law), the right to access information and the right for a good working environment to support journalists’ work performance.

The third section calls on media figures in the Muslim world to, among others, “take care of Islam’s heritage, history and civilization, and also of the Arabic language as the language of the Koran and prayers, and confront atheism and all other anti-Islam tendencies that spread hatred against Islam and Muslims”.

The fourth section details calls for “support for Muslim peoples in their efforts to resist oppression and occupations” and to adhere to general principles in a journalistic universal code of ethics, such as “refraining from publishing and broadcasting all forms of incitement to violence, keeping away from the fabrication of events and verifying the news and being honest in its reporting”. Most points are still added to with the note “within sharia guidelines” or according to “Islamic morals”.

Organized jointly by the MWL and the Indonesian Religious Affairs Ministry, the Jakarta conference drew hundreds of participants, including academics and media practitioners from dozens of Muslim countries, as well as representatives from Islamic organizations in non-Muslim majority nations.

Islamic Affairs Department Cancels Beauty Pageant for Contestants

The Sarawak Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) has asked five Muslim contestants in the ongoing Miss Borneo Beautiful 2011 to pull out from the pageant finals.

The advice was given in a counselling session for the five women at the Jais premises yesterday.

The five -- Melatie Melissa, 22, Natasha Nur Amarina Mohamad Kaie, 21, Adira Kamil, 23, Sharifah Nadzirah Wan Hamid, 23, and Roszainah Suhaili, 21 -- sat through two hours of counselling.

Present were president of Majlis Islam Sarawak Datuk Putit Mat Zen, Jais director Abang Shamsudin Abang Seruji and Sarawak mufti Kipli Yassin.

Abang Shamsudin said the department had received several public complaints.

"The syariah dictates that beauty pageants are illegal. Their parents should be aware of this."

He added that Jais had proof that the five had exposed their aurat ( intimate parts of the body that have to be covered).

Abang Shamsudin said Jais, however, would not stop the organiser, Alaric's Production Company, from continuing with the event as there were 13 others who were non-Muslims.

One of the participants, Adira from here, said apart from granting their request not to wear swimsuits, they were treated well by the organiser, Alaric Soh.

"Most of the outfits we wear in this contest are ordinary. Alaric has told us it is not overly sexy and there's definitely no swimsuit."

The accounting student also said that her family and friends strongly supported her.

Meanwhile, Soh said: "I have been organising beauty pageants for 32 years, and Miss Borneo Beautiful since 2009. This is the first time we have been called up by the department.

"The participation of the Muslims is suddenly becoming an issue now, although we had no problems in the past. I will not force the girls to pull out or drop them from the pageant."
