A cold-blooded murder in broad daylight, a self-confessed assassin in custody, but a year on, former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer’s assassination is not a resolved chapter.

After a ten month long trial, the self-confessed assassin, Mumtaz Qadri, was awarded death sentenced by the Anti-Terrorism Court on October 1, 2011.

The trial judge, Syed Pervaiz Ali Shah, observed in his verdict that while a ‘blasphemer’ is wajibul qatl (deemed to be killed), and can only be forgiven by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself, the case raised two major questions.

First, who declares one a blasphemer, and two, if one is declared as such, who will execute them?

The judge decreed that individuals cannot be given the authority to determine a person a blasphemer, infidel or non-Muslim.

Besides, individuals cannot be allowed to execute the punishment because it would pave the way for anarchy and turmoil in society, the judge added.

The judge also rejected Qadri’s defence of acting on sudden provocation.

“The statements of the governor about blasphemy laws were published in 2010 and the murder was committed on January 4, 2011,” the judge observed.

“Further it was not the plea of the accused that the deceased made these remarks in his presence. The accused himself put a provocative question to Taseer as he was coming out of restaurant and it was not the deceased who provoked the killer,” the judge added.

The conviction sparked countrywide protests by Qadri’s supporters, and in Rawalpindi, lawyers of district bar association forced the Lahore High Court (LHC) chief justice to transfer Shah, the trial judge.

Appeal pending

Qadri, represented by former LHC chief justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, appealed his conviction at the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The court admitted the appeal for regular hearing on October 12, 2011.

Qadri, in his appeal, has argued that he did not commit a murder but killed a blasphemer and that the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) could not grant him death sentence for murdering an individual.

His lawyers have further argued that the trial court, while handing down death sentence on two counts to Qadri, avoided Islamic jurisprudence laws.

They have further maintained that the ATC in Rawalpindi was not legally allowed to conduct the trial of the former constable in Adiala jail, since he did not commit any offence related to terrorism.

Doctors Without Borders Doctors Become Doctors Without Lives In Somalia

Mogadishu - One week after the death of two World Food Program staff members and an aid worker, two staff members of Doctors Without Borders were killed in the capital of Somali. The government labels the killings as isolated incidents.

Philappe Havet, age 53, was a Belgium national and the country director for the medical agency, while Andrias Karel Keiluhu, age 44, was from Indonesia and one of the agency's medical doctors. One worker died in the aid agency's compound while the other died following his surgery later on that evening, reported The Star.

The remaining medical staff of Doctors Without Borders, called in French the "Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), " were relocated for security reasons. However, they are still planning on continuing emergency medical assistance in numerous areas of Somali, including Mogadishu, where the shootings took place.

“MSF will be relocating some staff for security reasons, but remains committed to continuing our humanitarian work in Mogadishu and elsewhere in ,” the group said in a statement Friday, published by Washington Post.

The Star reports that a Somali logistics officer from Doctors Without Borders had been fired this past Wednesday over accusations of medical theft. He returned to the agency office the next day with a gun, shooting and killing the two medical staff members in retaliation.

The area is considered a peaceful city,even though it is located in a country filled with violence with aid workers viciously being targeted.

On December 18, a prominent broadcast journalist was shot to death, assassinated for reporting the news in Somali, according to a local journalists' union. Many journalists are living in Nairobi, Kenya, in self-imposed exile as they are fearful for their lives. In recent years, over two dozen journalists have been killed.

Doctors Without Borders is a humanitarian-aid non-governmental organization. It is best known for providing assistance for developing countries struggling against endemic endemic diseases and war-torn areas, brought together in 1971 by French doctors and journalists. The agency is located in Geneva, Switzerland.

In 2007 over 26,000, mostly local, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, logistical experts, water and sanitation engineers and administrators provided medical aid in over 60 countries. Private donors provide about 80% of the organization's funding, while governmental and corporate donations provide the rest, giving MSF an annual budget of approximately US$400 million. (Wikipedia)

A vulnerable teenager was stabbed and thrown into a canal to die after she brought ‘shame’ on an Asian family, a court heard yesterday.

Laura Wilson, 17, who was groomed for sex by a string of British Pakistani men, was repeatedly knifed by 18-year-old Ashtiaq Asghar.

He then pushed her into the water, using the point of the knife to force her head below the surface as she fought to stay alive.

Laura Wilson had a brief fling with near neighbour Ishaq Hussain, 22, and gave birth to their daughter in June last year but he refused to accept the child was his, the court was told

Asghar was furious after the young mother revealed details of their sexual relationship to his Muslim family and was on ‘a mission to kill’, the court was told.

He exchanged a series of texts with married friend and mentor Ishaq Hussain, 22, who had also had an affair with Laura, and who the judge described as a man who regarded white girls as  ‘sexual targets, not human beings’.

In one message, sent a day before he killed Miss Wilson, Asghar wrote: ‘I’m gonna send that kuffar (non-Muslim) bitch straight to Hell.’

In another he wrote: ‘I need to do a mission.’ He talked of buying a pistol and ‘making some beans on toast’, a reference to spilling blood used in Four Lions, a satirical film about suicide bombers.

Last night, Asghar was told he must serve a minimum of 17-and-a-half years after he pleaded guilty to murder and was jailed for life. Mr Hussain was acquitted of murder by joint enterprise after a retrial.

Sentencing Asghar, Lord Justice Davis told him: ‘I take the view you came under the influence of Mr Hussain who is something of a mentor to you. 

'He seems to have regarded girls, white girls, simply as sexual targets. He does not treat them as human beings at all. You got into that mindset yourself.

‘You no doubt once had feelings for Laura but treated her with contempt in the latter stages.’

The judge added: ‘I am sure there was a plan between you and Mr Hussain and that was a plan initiated by you. 

‘You talked about getting out your hit list. Mr Hussain then encouraged you in it. I am quite sure he was lying when he said there was no plan.’ 

After killing Miss Wilson he went to a snooker hall ‘without a care in the world’ and tried to hide the evidence.

Miss Wilson was a troubled teenager who was first identified as being at  risk of sexual exploitation by British Pakistani men when she was 12.

She had developed several links with Asian men in her home town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

In 2007, when she was 13, she and her family appeared on The Jeremy Kyle Show. During the programme – about out-of-control children – her sister warned her that ‘your attitude is going to get you in big danger’. 

Workers at a child sexual exploitation project later sent a report to social services, but no action was taken to remove her from what became a  continuing spiral of sexual abuse. 

By the time she was 16, she had embarked on an affair with Mr Hussain, who was then 20 and already married.

The teenager's body was found in this canal in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

She gave birth to a daughter in June last year, but Mr Hussain refused to accept that the child was his.

Four months later, and just days before she was murdered on October 12, she ‘shamed’ Asghar and Mr Hussain by informing their families of her relationship with both men.

She told Asghar’s mother she loved her son and ‘wanted to have babies’ by him. But Mrs Asghar was furious and attempted to hit Miss Wilson with a shoe, branding her ‘a dirty white bitch’ who should ‘keep your legs closed’, the trial was told.

Nicholas Campbell QC, prosecuting, said that in subsequent text messages Asghar mounted ‘a mission to kill Laura Wilson’. 

Asghar and Mr Hussain had decided that Miss Wilson was ‘a loose cannon and they had to get rid of her’, Sheffield Crown Court was told.

Asghar then lured her to a late-night meeting by the Sheffield and Keadby Canal near her home and stabbed her several times. One wound was seven inches deep.

Rotherham Safeguarding Children Board, which co-ordinates agency work, undertook a serious case review after Miss Wilson’s murder but its findings have not been published.

Earlier this year, the issue of vulnerable white girls being targeted by Asian men for sex prompted Jack Straw, the former home secretary, to claim some British Pakistani men regard white girls as ‘easy meat’.

He spoke out after two Asian men who raped girls in Derby were given indefinite jail terms. 

‘We need to get the Pakistani community to think much more clearly about why this is going on and to be more open about the problems that are leading to a number of Pakistani heritage men thinking it is OK to target white girls in this way,’ he said.

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia beheaded a man in the kingdom's southwest on Tuesday after he was convicted of killing a drinking partner while they were consuming alcohol, the interior ministry announced.

Sultan al-Asiri, a Saudi, was beheaded by the sword after he was found to have shot dead another citizen, Mufreh Asiri, "as they met for drinking intoxicants," said the statement carried by state news agency SPA.

The beheading, which raises to 72 the number of executions in Saudi Arabia this year, took place in the southwestern city of Abha.

In September, Amnesty International called on the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom where 140 people were on death row to establish an "immediate moratorium on executions."

The rights group said Saudi Arabia was one of a minority of states which voted against a UN General Assembly resolution last December calling for a worldwide moratorium on executions.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

Amnesty says Saudi Arabia executed 27 convicts in 2010, compared to 67 executions announced the year before.

Pakistani woman kills, attempts to cook husband

Pakistani police on Thursday arrested a woman who had killed her husband and was attempting to cook his body parts after he planned to marry another woman without her permission.

The police arrested Zainab Bibi, 32, and her nephew Zaheer, 22, in the Shah Faisal colony of Pakistan's southern megacity Karachi, and recovered the bowl of flesh she planned to cook, said police chief for the area Nadeem Baig.

"They killed Ahmed Abbas, Zainab's husband, and chopped his body into pieces and were about to cook the flesh in a bowl," he told AFP, adding that the knife with which they killed the man had been recovered.

Television networks showed gruesome footage of the human flesh in a bowl ready for the stove.

A neighbour had alerted the police and investigations were ongoing, said Baig.

"There could be two factors behind her intention to cook the husband. One is to destroy the evidence and the other could be her immense hatred against him," over his plan to marry another woman, he said.

According to family law in the Islamic country, a man has to get permission from his first wife before his second marriage, but the law is rarely observed.

They are charged with conspiring with their friend – Iftekhar Murtaza – to murder his ex-girlfriend’s family because of a failed romance. SANTA ANA – A prosecutor Thursday described as "slaughter" the beating and burning deaths of two members of an Anaheim Hills family in 2007 as a trial began for two men accused of conspiring to help a friend murder his ex-girlfriend's father and older sister.

Co-defendants Vitaliy Krasnoperov, 26, of Hollywood and Charles Anthony Murphy Jr., 26, of Mission Hills are charged with murder and attempted murder, plus special circumstances for their roles in the May 21, 2007, slayings of Jayprakash Dhanak, 56, and Karishma Dhanak, 20.

They are accused of helping their friend, Iftekhar Murtaza, 26, of Van Nuys, to murder his ex-girlfriend's family because of a failed romance.

The victims were abducted from their home, beaten and stabbed, and their bodies set on fire.

Among other evidence at the trial will be statements made by the two men, Deputy District Attorney Howard Gundy told jurors in Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals' courtroom during his opening remarks.

"Both these men ... lied to protect themselves and Iftekhar Murtaza even though both knew that he was responsible for the slaughter of the" Dhanak family, Gundy said.

Krasnoperov and Murphy are being tried together after their cases were consolidated by Goethals. Murtaza is scheduled for trial on similar charges next year. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted

Gundy contends that Murtaza plotted the attack because he perceived the Dhanaks had forced their youngest daughter, Shayona, to break off their romance. And, with the parents and her older sister out of the way, he could clear the obstacles to getting back with her, Gundy said.

The prosecutor told jurors Krasnoperov started providing Murtaza the "momentum" to commit the crimes within a day of the breakup, suggesting and looking for a hit man to do the job.

Murtaza offered Murphy, a childhood friend, $30,000 to help carry out the killings, Gundy said. Among other evidence, cellphone records place Murphy in the Dhanaks' neighborhood on the night of the killing, he said.

"This case is about the intersection of these three men" and how it led to the deaths and near death of members of the Dhanak family, the prosecutor said.

Defense attorneys for Krasnoperov and Murphy elected to reserve their opening statements for when the prosecution rests its case.

Dhanak's parents, devout Hindus, disapproved of her nearly three-year relationship with Murtaza, who is Muslim, Shayona Dhanak said when she testified at Krasnoperov's first trial earlier this year. That trial ended in a hung jury.

Krasnoperov was the first of the three co-defendants to stand trial, four years after the burned bodies of Shayona Dhanak's loved ones were discovered in the early hours of May 22, 2007, near a bike trail in William R. Mason Regional Park, not far from UC Irvine.

Though he wasn't present for the killings, he is being prosecuted for murder under the legal theory that he was an "aider and abettor" for his alleged role in the planning and the cover-up, prosecutors say.

Brent Romney, Krasnoperov's attorney during his first trial, argued that his client merely tried to calm down an angry Murtaza after his breakup with Shayona Dhanak and wasn't the only person Murtaza talked with about murdering the Dhanaks.

Romney painted Internet chats between Krasnoperov and Murtaza as "banter" among friends with no agreement to kill. Krasnoperov, Romney said, was a nonviolent person and a "goofball."

Anaheim firefighters found Jayprakash's wife, Leela Dhanak, unconscious on a neighbor's lawn when they responded to a report that the Dhanak home was engulfed in flames. Leela Dhanak had been beaten and her throat slashed, but she survived the attack.

If convicted, Krasnoperov and Murphy face potential sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Quebec TV Host: Israel Indiscriminately Murders Innocent Palestinians

On November 2's broadcast of Face à Face, a daily news and debate morning talk show on the Quebec French-language television channel V (formerly TQS), hosts Caroline Proulx and Stéphane Gendron gave their opinions on Canada’s decision to keep UNESCO funding at current levels, while ceasing further volunteer payments, after the organization admitted “Palestine” as a member.

Gendron, who is notorious for his vitriolic anti-Israel views, scandalously accused Israel of planning to steal Palestinian land by running over and murdering innocent Palestinian civilians with bulldozers, in retaliation for “Palestine’s” admission to UNESCO.  To watch this segment please click here or on the image below. “The Minister of Foreign affairs, John Baird, decided not to make further contributions to UNESCO, why? Because the U.S. decided to cut its funding, why? Because Palestine dared to be admitted to UNESCO. This is appalling! It is an affront to peace! Do you know what Israel did? In revenge for the admission of Palestine to UNESCO, they decided to build 2000 homes in areas that do not belong to them, the occupied territories, so they are going to bulldoze people, kill people, they will give them 5 minutes to get out and then they’ll run people down with bulldozers. And Canada supports this.”

It is simply unacceptable for a television host of a mainstream morning talk show to give air to such calumnious libel. Neither is it acceptable for V television station to allow this sort of inflammatory rhetoric to be broadcast to its viewers. Not only is there no basis nor precedent for such Israeli actions, Gendron’s accusations have crossed the line from legitimate opinion to inflammatory discourse.

As we alluded to earlier, Stéphane Gendron, the Mayor of Huntington, Quebec, has a history of uttering hateful anti-Semitic rhetoric and disseminating egregious falsehoods against Israel. Previously, on the September 23 edition of Face à Face, Gendron claimed: “Before 1948, ... the Jews stole the land from the Palestinians...” and  “it’s the Jews that invented terrorism.”

In the wake of Israel's interdiction of the Gaza-bound flotilla, an effort to enforce a legal maritime blockade to prevent the smuggling of deadly weapons to the Hamas terrorist regime, Gendron authored a column published in the Journal de Montreal on June 1 where he spuriously compared the Gaza Strip to the Warsaw Ghetto. Apart from this appalling comparison, Gendron's screed completely ignored Israel's legitimate security concerns. He failed to acknowledge past precedents which justify Israel’s blockade, such as Israel's interception of over 50 tonnes of Russian and Iranian-made weapons in 2002 on the Palestinian Authority freighter Karine-A, or its November 2009 interception of "hundreds of tonnes" of arms from Iran destined to Hezbollah, in a raid only several dozen miles off its coast. At the time, HonestReporting Canada successfully negotiated prominent opinion space in a subsequent edition of Le Journal de Montreal to rebut Gendron's outrageous assertions. Shortly after Israel's 2008 Operation Cast Lead, which was a response to over 10,000 rocket attacks into Israel from Gaza,  Gendron posted an odious letter to his blog addressed to Prime Minister Stephen Harper claiming that the "Zionist Government of Israel" was conducting a "genocide."

Finally, in an interview with Le Soleil in August 2006, Gendron referred to Israelis as modern-day Nazis ("Les Israéliens, ce sont les nazis des temps modernes"). He later claimed that he was referring to the current Government of Israel and that the analogy was fitting. Despite being condemned for his comments, he refused to issue a retraction or apology. At the time, B'nai Brith Canada described his statements as inherently racist, calling his comparisons "beyond the pale" and a "grotesque distortion of history."

HonestReporting Canada has previously called on Canadian media outlets to distance themselves from Gendron. We reiterate this call today with even greater fervour. Gendron should not be given a platform for his bigoted views. His attempts to incite and libel Israel are grounded in ignorance and hate. Gendron’s claim that Israel indiscriminately murders innocent Palestinians with bulldozers utterly discredits him as a suitable host of a daily talk show on Quebec’s V television channel.
