Veena Malik: I didn't go missing, I was just resting
Bollywood actress Veena Malik says she was resting in a Mumbai hotel over the weekend unaware that her manager had reported her missing.
The controversial Pakistani model and actress was speaking publicly for the first time since being reported as going AWOL on Friday. Fears had been raised for her safety after she had reportedly received death threats over her daring photo shoot for FHM India.
She had complained of feeling depressed in the storm which followed publication of the photos, which showed her naked except for a temporary tattoo on her arm.
But Malik, who was tracked down to the hotel yesterday, says she didn’t go missing but was simply resting.
“I had free time at my disposal and since I had been working for the past 48 hours, I checked in a hotel and went to sleep, she told the Express Tribune newspaper in India.
“When I woke up, I saw that there were numerous calls and text messages on my cell phone. I don’t tell people around me what I am going to do in my down time. However, I think I called my mother after checking in the hotel and told her that I was very tired.
“I believe I am old enough to take care of myself and before assuming that I was kidnapped or murdered, the media should have thought about that.”

Meanwhile, Malik has defended her decision to pose topless for FHM India, with just the ISI (an acronym for the Pakistan spy agency) fake tattoo on her arm.
She said: "As far as the shoot is concerned; don’t American girls wear bikinis and have CIA painted on their bodies?
“This is exactly what happened here. It was [editor] Kabeer Sharma’s idea and we did it for fun. People should not take this seriously.”
“Our entertainment industry should ask the world, ‘Why can’t a Pakistani woman dress up the way she wants to?’
“There are so many Indian Muslim models who wear bikinis but Pakistani girls can’t — this is because Pakistani girls have never asserted their right. I am the one who took up this initiative.”
However, Malik is still threatening to sue FHM India, claiming they doctored photos to make her look nude when she was actually just topless. The magazine has responded by saying they have video footage proving she was fully naked.
Malik insisted: “I did not pose nude, I did a bold shoot. I am living on my own terms, I have the courage to do whatever I feel like doing and people should either support it or remain quiet.
Asked if she will take the matter to court, Malik replied: “Yes, I won’t back out now. I got played.”
She also played down reports that she’d received death threats because of her controversial shoot in FHM India. Since the pictures appeared of her militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba criticised her in a strongly-worded statement.
It said: "She has made fun of all Muslim women and brought shame to the entire nation. Veena Malik will be dealt with accordingly on her return toPakistan ." Spokesman Abu Usama added ominously: "Our faithful are prepared to welcome her."
Meanwhile, Muslim cleric Maulana Abdul Qawi had warned of a fatwa against Malik for ‘shaming Islam’.
But Malik said: “I am not receiving any death threats. I am safe and my family is safe."
